Millions of refugee youth have talent, passion, and dreams—but lack access to real opportunities to grow. In refugee camps and host communities, structured sports programs are rare. Mentorship is limited. Platforms for youth development are almost nonexistent. Many young people spend 10 to 20 years waiting for resettlement, leaving their lives and their potential on hold.
Refugee Basketball Academy was founded by Kulimushi Mutanda Stephane and a group of sports enthusiasts who wanted to share their passion with others. Our journey started with a small group of students, and we have since grown into a thriving community of athletes, coaches, and instructors. We believe that the problem is not a lack of talent—the problem is a lack of access, structure, and opportunity.
"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." — Wayne Gretzky. This quote drives everything we do. We refuse to let refugee youth miss their shot at a better future.
Without guidance and positive environments, youth become vulnerable to crime, drug abuse, school dropout, and hopelessness. That's why our model works in four simple steps: First, we recruit talent from Uganda's refugee communities. Second, we train discipline and skills through elite basketball. Third, we build mindset and leadership through mentorship. Finally, we connect our players to education and real opportunities.
From Player to Leader: The Transformation
Take David, a 16-year-old who arrived at our academy with raw talent but no direction. Through our structured program, he learned discipline, teamwork, and leadership. Today, he's not only one of our best players but also a mentor to younger athletes. "I never thought I could play competitively," David says. "Here, I found family, discipline, and a dream. Now I'm aiming for a scholarship thanks to their mentorship."
- Recruit Talent: We identify passionate young athletes from Uganda's refugee communities, giving them a platform to grow.
- Train Discipline & Skills: Elite basketball training that builds technical ability, work ethic, and a champion mindset.
- Build Mindset & Leadership: Mentorship programs that develop confidence, resilience, and the ability to lead on and off the court.
- Connect to Education & Opportunities: We bridge the gap between talent and real pathways—education, scholarships, and a brighter future.
At Refugee Basketball Academy, we're not just building basketball players—we're building future leaders. Our values of integrity, respect, and teamwork guide everything we do. We strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and encouraged to pursue their goals. Join us in turning potential into opportunity, one player at a time.
